Why couples therapy?

Relationships take work. That is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that two people are trying.

Whether you are dealing with communication issues, a major life transition, conflict that keeps repeating, or something that feels too big to talk about on your own, couples therapy gives you a structured, supportive place to work through it together with the help of a professional who is not on either side.

At Northeast Family Services, our clinicians are trained in evidence-based approaches to couples counseling. Sessions are available in office and via telehealth across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Hampshire.

What Couples Therapy Can Help With

Couples come to us for many reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Communication problems that lead to the same arguments over and over
  • Trust issues or recovering from infidelity
  • Navigating a major life change such as a new baby, a job loss, a move, or a health crisis
  • Growing apart or feeling disconnected
  • Conflict about parenting, finances, or family relationships
  • Intimacy concerns
  • Considering separation or divorce and wanting support through the process
  • Premarital counseling for couples who want to start strong

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy. Many couples come to us because they want to build stronger communication habits before a small problem becomes a bigger one.

What to Expect

Your first session is about getting a clear picture of where things stand. Your therapist will meet with both of you together and take time to understand your history, your goals, and what is bringing you in. From there, you will work together on a plan that fits your relationship.

Sessions are about 50 minutes. Most couples meet weekly or every other week, depending on what works best for your schedule and your goals.

Couples therapy at Northeast Family Services is available in office at our locations across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Hampshire. Virtual sessions are also available for couples who prefer to meet from home.

Our Approach

Our therapists use evidence-based methods that are proven to help couples communicate better, rebuild trust, and work through conflict in a healthier way. Every couple is different, and your therapist will tailor their approach to what makes sense for you.

We do not take sides. We do not assign blame. We help you hear each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Northeast Family Services offer couples therapy?

Yes. We offer couples counseling and marriage therapy at our locations across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Hampshire, as well as via telehealth for couples who prefer virtual sessions.

Do both partners have to come to every session?

In most cases, yes. Couples therapy works best when both partners attend sessions together. In some situations, your therapist may recommend individual sessions alongside couples sessions. They will let you know what makes sense for your situation.

What is the difference between couples therapy and marriage counseling?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both refer to therapy that involves two partners working with a therapist to improve their relationship. At Northeast Family Services, we work with couples in all types of relationships, married or not.

Can couples therapy help if we are considering separation or divorce?

Yes. Some couples come to therapy specifically to work through a potential separation or divorce in a constructive way. Therapy can help both partners communicate more clearly, make decisions together, and if there are children involved, figure out how to co-parent effectively.

Is couples therapy available online?

Yes. We offer virtual couples therapy sessions via secure, HIPAA-compliant video. Both partners can join from the same location or from separate locations if needed.

How long does couples therapy take?

It depends on what you are working through. Some couples see meaningful progress in a few months. Others prefer ongoing support. Your therapist will work with you to set goals and check in on your progress regularly.

Do you offer premarital counseling?

Yes. Premarital counseling is a great way for couples to build strong communication habits and work through potential areas of conflict before they become bigger issues. Contact us to get started.
