Why in-home behavioral therapy?
When a child is struggling with difficult behaviors, the hardest part is often that those behaviors happen at home. In-home behavioral therapy meets your family exactly there.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, in-home behavioral therapy focuses on understanding and changing specific behaviors in the environment where they actually occur. A trained therapist and a paraprofessional works directly with your child and your family to identify what is driving challenging behaviors and build practical strategies to address them. These are strategies your family can use every day, not just during a session.
This service is available in Massachusetts through the Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI), a MassHealth-funded program for children and families.
- How it is different from in-home therapy
In-home therapy and in-home behavioral therapy are related but different services, and understanding each helps families figure out which one fits their child's needs.
In-home therapy is a clinical mental health service where a therapist provides counseling to a child or family in the home. It focuses on emotional well-being, mental health, and therapeutic goals.
In-home behavioral therapy is a more hands-on behavioral approach. It is focused on specific behaviors, what triggers them, how they escalate, and what strategies can reduce or replace them. Teams work closely with parents and caregivers to build skills that last beyond the session itself.
Many children receive both services as part of a broader Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) plan. Our team can help you understand what your child may qualify for and how the services work together.
Who this is for
In-home behavioral therapy is a good fit for children and teens who display challenging behaviors at home that are difficult to manage, families who need practical tools and strategies (rather than just a place to talk), children whose behaviors are affecting family life, school performance, or relationships, and households where a parent or caregiver wants direct support and coaching alongside their child.
This service is available in Massachusetts only, through the Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) program.
How it works
Your family starts with an assessment to understand your child's behaviors, what is driving them, and what your family's goals are. From there, a provider designs an individualized plan and works with your child and family directly in the home.
Sessions are structured around your child's specific behavioral goals. Your provider coaches parents and caregivers on how to respond to challenging behaviors consistently and effectively. Progress is tracked regularly, and the approach is adjusted as your child develops.
Massachusetts Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI)
In-home behavioral therapy in Massachusetts is funded through the Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI), a MassHealth program for children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. If your child is covered by MassHealth, they may qualify for this service as part of a broader home and community-based services plan.
