Why therapeutic mentoring?

Therapeutic mentoring services include supporting, coaching and training your child in age-appropriate behaviors, interpersonal communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution, relating appropriately to other children and adolescents as well as adults. These are focused on recreational and social activities connected to a behavioral health treatment plan. The plan is developed with you by providers specializing in specific therapies that will benefit you and your family, including an Outpatient provider, an In-Home Therapy provider, and In-Home Behavior Service provider or a Family-Based Intensive Therapy provider. The Therapeutic Mentor and your child’s provider maintain close communication to be sure we are all working toward the same goals for your child. Together, we track your child’s progress, and we adjust the approach as they grow and develop.

  • How it works

Your child is matched with a trained therapeutic mentor who gets to know them, their goals, and the specific challenges they are working through. From there, mentoring sessions happen in community settings that are relevant to your child's daily life.

The mentor and your child's provider stay in close communication so that everyone is working toward the same goals. Together, we track your child's progress, and we adjust the approach as they grow and develop.

Who therapeutic mentoring is for

Therapeutic mentoring is especially helpful for children and teens who struggle with emotional regulation, peer relationships, or transitions between settings such as school, home, and community. It works well alongside therapy, giving your child consistent support outside of their therapy sessions.

Mentors work in coordination with your child's therapist to reinforce treatment goals and make sure the support your child receives is connected and consistent across every part of their life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapeutic mentoring?

It is one-on-one coaching and skills building provided by a trained mentor who works with your child in community settings. It focuses on building coping skills, social confidence, and emotional resilience in real-world situations rather than in a clinical office.

How is therapeutic mentoring different from therapy?

Therapy typically happens in a structured setting with a therapist. Therapeutic mentoring happens in the community alongside your child during their daily life. The two services are designed to work together, not replace each other.

Does my child need to already be receiving therapy to get a therapeutic mentor?

Yes, your therapeutic mentor works hand-in-hand with the team providing in-home or in-office therapy, in-home behavioral service, family-based intensive treatment, or intensive care coordination. They work together to achieve therapeutic goals.

Is therapeutic mentoring available outside of Massachusetts?

This service is currently available in Massachusetts only through the Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) program.
