Home and Community Based Services

Getting the right support for your child should not mean hours in waiting rooms or juggling office schedules. Rhode Island's home- and community-based services program brings qualified clinicians directly to your family, at home, in the community, and in the everyday settings where your child actually spends their time.

Northeast Family Services delivers home and community-based behavioral health services to children and families across Rhode Island through three programs: Home-Based Therapeutic Services (HBTS), Personal Assistance Services and Supports (PASS), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy. All three are available to families covered by Rhode Island Medicaid.

If you are not sure which program fits your child or whether your family qualifies, our team can walk you through it. You do not need to figure that out before reaching out.

  • What Are Rhode Island Home and Community Based Services?

Rhode Island's home and community based services are state-funded behavioral health programs for children and families covered by Medicaid. They are designed to provide support in the places where children live, learn, and grow, rather than requiring families to come to a clinical office.

These programs exist because research consistently shows that children benefit most when behavioral health support happens in their natural environment. Providers who see your child at home gain a deeper understanding of the family dynamics, routines, and challenges.

Northeast Family Services has been delivering these services in Rhode Island for more than 15 years, working alongside families in North Providence, Warwick, and communities throughout the state.

Services Available in Rhode Island

Northeast Family Services provides three home and community based programs in Rhode Island:

HBTS is an in-home behavioral health service that brings a provider directly to your family. A clinician works with your child and family on emotional and behavioral challenges in the setting where those challenges actually occur, your home. HBTS is designed for children and families who benefit from flexible, community-based care rather than a traditional office environment.

HBTS is available to children and families in Rhode Island covered by Medicaid.

PASS brings a trained specialist into the child's home and community to help them live independently in their home and community. It is available to children and families enrolled in Rhode Island Medicaid. Our team can tell you more about how PASS works and whether your child may be a good fit.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder, delivered at home and in the community by trained behavior technicians supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts. ABA in Rhode Island is available through the state's home and community-based services program for families covered by Medicaid.

Who Qualifies?

Rhode Island home- and community-based services are available to children and families covered by Rhode Island Medicaid who are experiencing emotional or behavioral health challenges. Eligibility varies by program and is based on your child's clinical needs and Medicaid enrollment status.

These services are a good fit for families where transportation to an office is a barrier, children who struggle to engage in traditional clinical settings, households where a parent or caregiver wants hands-on support alongside their child, and children whose behavioral or emotional challenges are affecting home life, school, or daily routines.
