Building Resilience from a Young Age

Building Resilience

Resilience is not something children are born with or without. It is something they build, one experience at a time, with the right support around them.

When children learn how to manage frustration, disappointment, fear, and change, they develop skills that can benefit them throughout their lives. We help children build these important coping tools early, creating a strong foundation before they face the challenges of adolescence and adulthood.

What Resilience Looks Like in Children

A resilient child is not a child who never struggles. It is a child who has learned how to cope with struggle in a healthy way. Resilience shows up as:

  • The ability to recognize and name emotions
  • The capacity to ask for help when something feels too big
  • The skill to work through conflict with peers or family members
  • The confidence to try something new even after a setback
  • The understanding that difficult feelings are temporary and manageable

These skills do not develop automatically. They develop through experience, through safe relationships, and in some cases through the guided support of a trained therapist.

How Northeast Family Services Supports Children

Northeast Family Services has been working with children of all ages since 2003. Our clinicians are trained to meet children where they are, using approaches that are appropriate for their age and their specific needs.

For younger children, therapy often incorporates play-based techniques. Play is how young children process the world and communicate what they cannot yet say in words. A trained therapist can use play to help a child work through anxiety, trauma, behavioral challenges, or transitions that feel overwhelming.

For older children and teens, therapy looks more like a conversation, with structured exercises and evidence-based tools woven in. The goal is always the same: help the child understand themselves better and build skills they can use in real life.

Services Available for Children at Northeast Family Services

  • In-home therapy for children who benefit from support in a familiar environment
  • ABA therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder, delivered at home and in the community
  • Therapeutic mentoring (MA Service Only) for children and teens who need one-on-one support outside the therapy room
  • Home and community-based programs including Massachusetts Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI), New York Children and Family Treatment and Support Services (CFTSS), and Rhode Island Home-Based Therapeutic Services (HBTS)
  • Outpatient therapy at offices across all four states
  • Virtual therapy for families who prefer telehealth

Getting Started Is Easier Than You Think

You do not need a referral from a pediatrician or school to reach out to Northeast Family Services. Just fill out our referral form, tell us a little about your child, and our intake team will follow up within one business day to match you with the right clinician.

Most children begin therapy within the same week the family reaches out. The sooner you start, the more time your child has to build the skills that will carry them forward.
